The A76 between Kilmarnock and Cumnock is fast, single-carriageway and busy with lorries. It has a lot of straights that tempt overtakes and a lot of bends that punish them. Breakdowns and collisions on it are common, and there is very little in the way of a safe verge to stop on.
The B743 runs west from Mauchline towards Ayr and the A70 crosses nearby — both are quieter country roads, but they're unlit and they catch people out in ice.
If you're stopped on the A76, get the car as far off the carriageway as you physically can, get everyone out on the left-hand side, and get well back from the road before you phone. Lorries come round those bends faster than you'd like.
