Broken Down on the A77?

Broken down on the A77? We'll connect you with an available local recovery operator, wherever you are on it.

If you're on a live carriageway

  1. Get the vehicle as far left as you can and put your hazards on.
  2. Leave by the left-hand doors and get behind the barrier, away from traffic.
  3. Do not attempt repairs at the roadside on a fast road.
  4. Call us — and if you are in immediate danger, call 999 first.

The A77 runs from Glasgow down through Ayrshire to Stranraer and the Irish ferry ports. It changes character completely along the way, and so do the problems.

North of Kilmarnock it's motorway-standard and fast. Around Kilmarnock and the Bellfield interchange it's a busy, complicated set of junctions. Past Ayr and Prestwick it stays quick and dual in places. South of Maybole it becomes a rural trunk road — single carriageway, undulating, with long overtaking straights and blind crests, and it carries a constant stream of HGVs running to and from Cairnryan.

That freight traffic is why breaking down on the southern A77 is genuinely dangerous. Lorries come over crests at speed and a stationary car is very hard to see until late.

If you stop on the A77: get as far left as the verge allows, hazards on, everyone out through the left-hand doors, and get behind the barrier or well up the verge — not standing beside the car, and never on the offside. Then call. If you're in a live lane and can't move, call 999 first.

Tell us the direction you're travelling and the nearest junction or landmark, and we'll get the closest available operator to you.
